Abstract

The results of apple breeding for priority directions are given. A brief description of the world’s first series of triploid cultivars and scab immune triploid apple cultivars created from the intervalence crossings as well as crossings of diploid cultivars is given. Hybrid apple seedlings that combine a columnar habit, scab immunity and a triple set of chromosomes in their genomes are of great scientific and practical interest. New scab immune triploid and columnar apple cultivars have been developed at the All Russian Research Institute for Fruit Crop Breeding (VNIISPK) and included in the State Register of breeding achievements. These new apple cultivars from the VNIISPK breeding program are characterized by high quality of fruit and adaptability for growing in the central regions of Russiaand will provide fruit import substitution.
