Abstract

High demands made of new apple varieties and priority directions in breeding are shown in the article. It is affirmed that new domestic varieties are well competitive and give possibility to manage fruit import substitution in Russia successfully when introducing them into wide production. The development of scab immune, triploid and columnar apple varieties is the priority direction in apple breeding nowadays. Great attention is paid to the development of the varieties combining the triploid number of chromosomes (3x) + immunity to scab (Vf); columnar habit (Co) + immunity to scab (Vf). The development of the varieties having immunity to scab + triploid number of chromosomes + columnar habit is of special interest. Elite seedlings combining these valuable traits have already been obtained. There are all grounds that in the near future new apple varieties with a complex of these valuable traits will be developed.
