WITH HIS LIFE'S DEFRAYMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS: ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE VIR (INSTITUTE OF PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES) DURING THE WAR

Abstract

This paper highlights the work of the staff of the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources during the Great Patriotic War, during the Siege of Leningrad. It describes the current work of the institute's graduate students to perpetuate the memory of the heroes – the institute's staff members who not only preserved Vavilov's unique collection of plant seeds but also supported the front by continuing their research. They developed plant-based wound treatments; methods for dyeing fabrics in camouflage colors using local plant dyes; methods for extracting valuable nutrients from food and industrial waste; participated in developing a recipe of blockade bread; and provided agrometeorological consultations essential for military operations and transportation. Furthermore, the VIR’s staff who remained in the besieged city cared for their fellow citizens: they taught residents basic planting and care skills, organized and held lectures, and published educational literature. The VIR’s staff in the blockade Leningrad, dying of hunger, refused to entertain the idea that seeds could be used to save their own lives. Each of these individuals accomplished a personal feat and contributed to the salvation of the Vavilov collection.
